A home away from home – Shama Women’s Centre provides a safe haven to women from diverse backgrounds; many of who suffer multiple barriers such as lack of unemployment skills, education, and often at risk of or victims of domestic abuse who face social and economic isolation. It is the only Centre of its kind in Leicester that caters for the needs of the most ethnically diverse city in UK. It’s multi-lingual staff and volunteers provide women and their families with holistic support packages including counselling, training in its exclusive women-only purpose built industrial textiles training centre, accredited qualifications , language support, help into work, volunteering and work placements. It runs a range of social activities, through creative workshops, peer-support, and access to gym, sauna and nursery helping women overcome isolation. The Centre has provided services for 35 years, being established by a group of women as a local hub in Highfields, Leicester who felt isolated. Over the years its services have attracted women and their families across the City and County; as testament to its reputation of empowering over 30,000 women into training and work; and has survived a series of local authority funding cuts which it was significantly reliant on. The resilience of its staff and volunteers and support of service users has been key to its survival, with reliance on funding through grants; which are increasingly short term, recognising the need to diversify its income sources to survive. Shama Women’s Centre are recognised as ‘experts’ by voluntary and statutory partners for their exceptional services to vulnerable women; enabling the organisation to develop stronger partnerships and build credibility. One such outstanding achievement, is its pioneering ‘Bereavement to Achievement Plus ‘service funded by the National Lottery Community Fund since 2014 ; which meets a gap in mental health services for bereaved BAME women and their families; through counselling support, befriending, training, help into work and holistic therapies. The service now provides emotional support to carers and parenting workshops. The Centre plans to utilise the expertise of its BACP qualified Counsellors to provide mental health counselling and training packages to organisations to extend its support. The Programme has exceeded expectations, within 4 years more than 1200 families accessed the service, with a huge £2.1 million of savings to the local Health & Social Care budget This year marks the 35th anniversary of this exemplary centre, with a fantastic start to the year; being the only charity invited to meet the Royals and exhibit the work produced by their service users at the Leicester Market; in recognition for its achievement in supporting vulnerable women; a cause which HRH The Duchess of Cornwall supports. The response and feedback from the local community following the visit has been heart-warming, with a flurry of phone calls and emails from well-wishers and supporters. The Centre will be celebrating their fantastic achievements with a charity fundraiser to mark International Women’s Day in March; providing an opportunity for the business community to pledge ongoing contributions to help the centre continue to provide its much needed services to vulnerable women and their families. This will be the first of three events to showcase its services and to raise much needed funds to continue their exclusive work. For more information about how you can support this amazing centre, please contact: Website: www.shamawomenscentre.co.uk Facebook: @shamawomenscentre Twitter: @shamacentre |
